No matter if you call it "Really Simple Syndication" or "Rich Site Summary," RSS is definitely all the rage right now online. With email filtering, IP blocking and the newest "can Spam Act", every scampering for a better way to get their messages across to their subscribers.

With RSS, customers need to come to your site or open up their inboxes to get your latest news and updates. When they subscribe to your "feed", comes news them automatically. But Wait; I'm getting ahead of myself here. Let us return to the fundamental.

RSS is an XML-based format that originated from Netscape. If you want to use RSS, you first need to create what has been called a "feed". This is basically a file that you upload to your server. RSS feeds ends in .RSS rdf or.XML Extensions and can be created by hand. An RSS file must contain the headlines, links and summaries of the content you want to distribute.

When a feed is created, can other computers subscribe to your "channel" and read your updates using what is called an "Aggregator" or "aggregator."

Most feeds consist of a link with a short summary to click to read the entire article. If you want to let people know your website offers an RSS feed, you place an orange XML icon on your site, linked to the URL of your feed. It seems everyone is talking about RSS Feeds. They ve been around years but buzz is up on them as the technology continues to go mainstream. Some people reportedly abandoning their browsers and viewing on the Internet through their readers-but they hardly represent the public yet.

So do your site a?

This question is a little like asking, if your site needs a newsletter. Safe, sky won t fall tomorrow if you don t get one day, but when you realize the benefits of a news feed to your site and try it yourself, you can become an addict like the rest of us.

Reason # 1: More free traffic to your site

I m not exaggerating when I say that a frequently updated feed can bring you huge amounts of traffic in a short period of time. This won t be true forever.

Not exactly a capital flight, but here's the good part. on the fourth day, feed traffic doubled, and all other traffic continued to increase with the same speed. In 30 days, there would be at least 5,000 new targeted visitors-again, this count is not of my current traffic, or those who try my feed and stay subscribed, nor does it factor in what happens when traffic doubles again.
