An integral part of getting the most out of RSS really understanding how RSS works as a technology---basically understanding its structure and how to use it is best to get more readership and better search engine rankings.
The good part is that it is easy and quick to make, without need of any technical expertise and use only the default RSS publishing tools.
(A)) HOW RSS FEEDS ARE STRUCTURED
RSS feeds contain the basic information about the RSS feed itself and the individual content items that actually implement the content of the RSS you want to deliver to your target audiences or publish to other sites.
All such information shall be carried out within the different perscribed RSS feed items that are used for different purposes.
But how you use these features can actually define whether you get the most out of RSS or not.
Now all you need to actually learn how to create an RSS feed, because your RSS publishing software will do it for you, but you need to know what to put in these elements to make the most from them.
B) RSS FEED ITEMS
RSS feed items describes the RSS feed.
Each element encloses the actual descriptionary information, like a HTML tag.
The most important elements, you must be aware of in order to enhance marketing results are:
1. RSS FEED TITLE
The name of the RSS feed, which appear in the RSS reader, when a person access to your feed, as well as the search engines and so on.
You will develop your title, so it stands among other feeds in your subscribers RSS readers and attracts them, and is at the same time rich with your most important keywords to assure you achieve better Search engine placement for your feeds.
2. RSS FEED DESCRIPTION
A brief phrase that describes the RSS feed. As with the item title, description, attracting your target audiences (in many RSS readers description appears just below the feed title) and simultaneously assure better placement in search engines.
So keep it user-attractive, disseminating the content of the main points covered in your feed and the main benefits for readers, as well as search-engine-friendly with your most important keywords.
3. RSS FEED IMAGE
Element picture is used to display your logo on the RSS feed presentation in RSS readers. The default width of logo is 88 px and the maximum width is 144 px. The default image height is 31 px and the maximum height is 400 px.
Including your logo in your feed will make your feed more memorable for your subscribers, thus you increase actual readership, as well as provide additional branding for your business.
C) RSS CONTENT ITEM ELEMENTS
While the RSS feed items define and describe an RSS feed on the level of the entire feed, individual content item elements describing and bear the actual information you want to deliver to your target audiences.
And if there is any question about what RSS content items are contained in an RSS feed.
Each content element can then contain some or all of the elements that describe the content item, and give information.
1. RSS content TOPIC TITLE
The title of the specific content of the element, which of course appear in the RSS reader and all other places where your content is displayed.
Your content item titles are one of the most important thing in your RSS, determening whether your readers will actually read the rest of the content or on the search engines will rank it high enough for you.
Just think of the title as an e-mail message subject line and title of a Web page. E-mail subject line is what makes the recipient decide whether he will read the entire message or not. You need to keep to the point and give just enough information to make it inviting to read on.
Web page title has much weight with the search engines, to help you get higher rankings for your content on the keywords you are trying to optimize your Web page.
RSS content element the title performs both of these functions for you at the same time.
2. RSS content ITEM LINK
The URL points to a Web page on your site, where the user can read the entire contents of the content item, if you publish your RSS feeds in summary format. A "read more" type of destination.
If you publish your feeds in full-text format, the link can serve for archiving purposes, for example, if your customers will want to either clickthrough to your site and then bookmark your content in their internet browser.
Of course, if you do not want to give a backlink to your site, you need to, as the link element is optional. This could be useful if you use your RSS feed as a communicational meerly direct channel to send a quick message to your customers or any other, without also giving this content on your site.
But since most RSS users expect to be able to clickthrough it is recommended that you always give the link.
3. RSS content DESCRIPTION
This is where the actual body content of the information you are trying to deliver originate in actual history you are trying to tell.
The item description can be either a short summary, or can contain the full text content of the story, with pictures and almost everything else (there are some restrictions).
Depending on who you ask, some say that summary feeds are better, others will testify to their head to full-text feeds. What you decide you actually depends entirely on your business model and what you are trying to achieve with RSS. In short, there are no rules.
Also, you might not even need a description.
--> If you just want to deliver the headlines of your latest content and have people clickthrough to your site to find out more, you can easily do it. This will usually be useful for syndicating your content to other sites if you do not want them to publish something else, but your headline.
--> Or content that you provide may not even need a description. For example, you could create an RSS feed with the latest updates, stock market where the update would soon be delivered using only the element title. More about this in later chapters. What you need to know right now is, what kind of content can actually be included, if you decide you full text content.
Firstly, if you make it work right, the default text formating, such as bolding, fine in most RSS readers, although some can even ignore. Links within content and images is also not a problem, although again, some RSS readers can simply ignore them.
But still, most of the new is not so add some flavor to your full text content should not be a problem.
If you want to go further, even tables of content should work in most cases, actually, so you can post a full e-zine issue right inside a single RSS feed content element.
The worst problem is that different RSS readers will display this content in different ways, some even can't display tables at all.
And finally, if you want to syndicate your content to other sites, perhaps you just want a summary instead of full text content, so you may need to prepare a consolidated version of the feed as well.
