RSS for marketers

What is RSS-For marketers
Copyright 2005 Rok Hrastnik

RSS is a technology that has the potential to overcome many of the internet marketing challenges we are facing today and becoming a preferred tool to get 100% of your content delivered to your subscribers, as well as a tool to help you achieve top position search engine rankings.

Simple RSS explanation from the marketing point of view is that RSS is a simple to use publishing tool for marketers and publisher. You can get your content delivered to end-users, without fear of spam filters stop your messages and other content consumers (other Web sites, search engines and so on).

RSS gets your content delivered, period. And it helps you increase your site's ranking and drive new traffic to your sites.

But some marketers are still afraid that not enough internet users are using RSS feeds. Think again

While achieving no more than marginal penetration, increasing its consumption with amazing speed.

According to a report from the Pew Internet and American life project consume 5% (6 million) Americans online actually, news and information through RSS aggregators. So the market is already out!

>> BUT WHAT ARE RSS FEEDS?
RSS content is delivered via RSS feeds---simple files structured in a certain way.

These files contain some basic information about RSS feed (such as RSS feed title, logo, description, URL, etc.) and the actual content you want to deliver to your readers.

These content elements are the individual stories or articles (usually just descriptions of the articles actually published on the site internet publisher s), presented in a linear list.

But RSS is not just about text. You can easily use it to deliver audio content, video content, and even Powerpoint presentations and PDF files.

>> WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEEDS?
Point of RSS feeds is to get people to subscribe to them so that they can constantly receive fresh information from you.

IT s like to subscribe to e-mail newsletters, only that there s no e-mail involved and consequently no spam or spam filters.

But if you want to subscribe to your RSS feeds, your visitors need a special tool, called an RSS aggregator.

RSS aggregators are special tools that can take an RSS feed and display it to the end user. They come in many different forms and flavors, but the most popular desktop applications and web readers.

In the case of desktop RSS aggregators (example: http://www.awasu.com), end users must download them to their computers and install them there. Web-based RSS aggregators (example: http://www.bloglines.com) on the other hand are websites where users can create their own accounts, and then use these websites to view RSS content directly from their Web browsers.

After installing an RSS aggregator or registering at a web-based RSS aggregator Web service, the user must proactively add the link to your RSS feed in to the aggregator to view your content.

Each time you update your RSS feed by adding new content items to the RSS file, the user is notified, through his RSS aggregator, making available the content immediately before him, without having to deal with any spam filters and other barricades on the way.

And the best part, most RSS aggregators are free to use, so there's really no excuse to not get started today. And Oh yes there is an entire RSS publishing solutions!

Yes, RSS is the free way to get your content delivered every time.

Your RSS Feed might look like Spam

by k. Soft

RSS feeds seem to be the breakout technology for the financial year. With more users follow to turn them into driving traffic to their site, it s no wonder that an audit trail of RSS feed spam in their wake. A careful editing of your RSS feed could make the difference between being classified as genuine content or RSS spam.

RSS search engines are beginning to pick up steam. As more RSS feeds become searchable, number of visitors will increase and spam are sure to follow. It is an unfortunate side effect of free communication. While RSS users can typically unsubscribe to feeds they deem as spam, is browsing with keywords in an RSS search engine where the problem occurs.

RSS spam principally consists of three main types most often found in search engines RSS. The first type is keyword stuffing.

Keyword stuffing involves filling each RSS feed item with high value keywords to a specific topic. The articles are not meant for human visitors, but instead for Search engine robots to direct traffic to a target Web site. This RSS spam technique is nothing more than an adaptation of the typical keyword-stuffed Web page, often banned by major search engines.

The second type involves RSS feed link farms. These RSS articles often contain very little content, if someone other than a simple keyword. Their main attraction is the feed title. Click the feed title takes the feeds the user to a blog containing dozens or hundreds of other blogs and RSS, each route to several links in the courtyard. The objective of this type of RSS spam is to trick the user into clicking advertisements or directing them to a product Web site.

The third type is the creation of fake RSS feeds. These appear as legitimate, but often duplicated, article content. Whether they provide value or not is certainly debatable. These feeds are usually created in the mass, by using automated scripts, and appear similar to nature link farms. By attracting users to seemingly valuable content, they hope to get ad clicks or product Web site traffic.

Your RSS feed might happen to fall into one of these three categories. While you can currently experiencing increased traffic from search engines RSS, working these folders to filter out RSS spam techniques. However, you can still take advantage of RSS feeds and their power by following an RSS-friendly guideline.

Refrain from using automated scripts to create online content used by your RSS feeds. Instead, write your own original thoughts, product descriptions and reviews. It takes a little more time, but search engines will appreciate this content much more highly, your visitors will appreciate the unique content and subscription count to your RSS feed will grow. It is also important to keep your feed updated with changing content, as opposed to using a static feed, which remains the same. Search engines value dynamic feeds and will likely rank you higher as a result.

There are tools and services available, which aid in keeping an RSS feed updated with your changing content. Such services include FeedFire for converting your site's content to a regularly updated RSS feed or software such as FeedForAll for creating and editing RSS feeds.

A successful RSS feed is much the same as a successful Web page. It may take a little more time to digitize your thoughts, but the end result is well worth it. By avoiding tricks in RSS feed spam, you can make the difference in quality of feeds and enjoyment in your readers.

Pros and cons of RSS Feeds

If you are struggling with the decision to implement RSS feeds or not, consider the following pros and cons for webmasters who use RSS feeds as part of their content and message level ...
Benefits (Pros of using RSS)
The benefits for a webmaster who opts to implement RSS feeds on their website are numerous:
1. saves time
RSS feeds save time. RSS subscribers can quickly scan RSS feeds, without having to visit each site. Subscribers can then click the items they are interested in more information.

2. Timely

RSS feeds are timely. Even will automatically update any new information is posted, so that the information your subscribers receive through their RSS reader or news aggregator is timely on RSS feeds.

3. Spam free
RSS is free of spam. Subscribers don't have to worry about wading through huge amounts of spam in an attempt to get the information they're actually interested in.

4. Opt-In
RSS subscriber chooses what they want to see, and what information they wish to receive. Knowing they have full control, and that they must not give any personal information to subscribe, they will be more inclined to opt-in.

5. subscription is easy
It is also easy to unsubscribe from an RSS feed. If they don't like the information in an RSS feed, they can simply remove the RSS feed from their RSS reader or news aggregator to unsubscribe.

6. Alternate communication channel
RSS provides you with an alternate communication channel for your business. And the more channels you provide, the more opportunities you have to connect with your customers and potential customers.

7. Expands audience through Syndication
The very nature of RSS is that it is designed specifically for syndication (i.e. publication by others). And widespread syndication can expand your reach and enhance company brand.

8. can increase Backlinks

When an RSS feed is syndicated, it may increase the number of links back to the original site. And additional inbound links helps often better in organic search rankings home page rank.

9. increases productivity

RSS increases productivity, allowing people to quickly scan new posts and headlines, and only clicking through and spending time on topics of interest.

10. competitive
Whether you decide to implement RSS feeds or not, your competitors likely will. as a way to remain competitive is to implement RSS feeds and other 2.0 Web technology, and not allow your competition getting ahead of you.

Negatives (Cons against using RSS)

1. not widely adopted yet

Outside technical circles, RSS has not yet widely adopted. While it is becoming more and more popular, it is still far from a mainstream technology.

2. Content can easily be copied

The contents of an RSS feed can be easily copied and replicated, regardless of whether you want it, or not. Few aggregators respect the copyright of the content in an RSS feed.

3. Tracking subscribers is difficult

It is very difficult to track exactly the number of subscribers who read an RSS feed or the elements in an RSS feed. This is partly because the RSS at its heart, is all about achieving the broadest possible syndication.

4. Source origination difficult

It is sometimes difficult to distinguish the origin of an RSS feed item. When an item is syndicated, the source is not always specified. The available metrics are not always reflect the traffic received.

Consider the advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of an RSS feed as a channel of communication, and determine whether the benefits outweigh the risks in your own situation.

10 Tips for bloggers

Tips for creating a blog.
There are no hard and fast rules about how blog. That said, will bloggers probably increase their exposure by following some simple blog guidelines. 1.) Bo on the topic.
Opinions are generally accepted, but the contents of the items in the blog should all relate to a general theme. Unless you have an uncanny knack for humor, humor or cynicism, the majority of your readers be interested in the content that relates to a specific defined theme or loosely defined area of interest. Most readers won't care that you eat Cheerios for breakfast. However, they may be interested in that vinegar takes out stains and that toilet paper rolls big doughnut. Define a topic and stick to it, this will ensure that you create a loyal following of interested readers.2.) Bo informative.
If you try to create the impression that you are aware of, or a specific sector, be sure that you stay current news. If you endorse a product or express an opinion, you should check your facts; your reputation is at stake. If you offer an opinion, make sure that you qualify your post makes it clear that the content is intended as an editorial.3.) Old News is not news.
While blogging every day can be a brain drain, it is important that the information presented is current and accurate, writes an article or blurb about something that happened 6 months ago, will not be of interest to many. Tells your audience that Martha Stewart was convicted and will go to prison after her sentence is completed will make people question the value of your columns. 4.) adhere to a schedule.
Create a schedule and stick to it. Realizing that blogging requires time and effort, not to create unrealistic expectations and can not deliver. An occasional lapse or holiday is generally understood but readers returning to find stale, old content will find another blog with similar content. New blogs and RSS feeds will pop on a daily basis. If you have worked hard to develop an audience and a community you don't want to lose them due to lack of communication.5.) the Clarity and simplicity.
Keep your posts and blog entries clear and easy to understand. Remember, the Internet is global and expressions, and idioms is sometimes distorted or acronyms don't always translate. Sometimes a little explanation goes a long way. 6.) Keyword-rich.
If the goal of your blog is to increase your visibility, include related keywords in the title of the blog. Use the title as a headline to attract interest. Each item post should have a title that will attract attention but still be relevant to the position. The title should not be longer than 10 words -12.7.) Quantitycases.
In order to attract attention of search engines, you need to develop content and substance. A heading or a single sentence will not generate interest readers or help with Search engine ranking. Remember to archive old blog posts to develop a large portal of similarly themed content. 8.) frequency.
If your blog content is updated frequently, search engines tend to spider pages at regular intervals. 9.) spell checking and proof-reading.
It only takes a few extra moments and can save you from having to make embarrassing explanations. Remember, whatever you publish on the Internet can be found and archived. Think carefully what you post before doing. 10.) RSS.
RSS will increase your blog's reach. It is important that you include your blog content in an RSS feed to increase readership and distribution. Most weblog audiences are small, but with time and regular updates audiences grow. Bloggers can never have more than a few hundred readers, but the people who return to regularly are generally interested in what you have to say.

How Podcasting works

It has been said that a Google search in October of 2004 returned less than 6,000 results on the term "podcasting". A similar search gives today, more than 857,000 results. Like the blogging phenomenon, podcasting has come out of nowhere and attracted an enthusiastic following.
While some traditional radio talkshows have begun providing podcasts of their regularly scheduled broadcasts, has the bulk of the podcasts that have cropped up tend to be independent television stations that have a fascination with technology. As a result, some podcasts are a little ROUGH around the edges. However, it is clear that the technology that offers a significant opportunity and potential. Even nay-sayers believe that podcasting is more than a passing fad.
Podcasting is RSS, which is used to publish and distribute audio files. Podcasting provides a sound file of the RSS enclosure tag feed's. An enclosure tag is used in the RSS feeds to include certain types of files. The file contained in an enclosure tag can be: an image, a data file, a video file or an audio file. Podcasting refers specifically to the RSS feeds that contain audio files in their enclosure tag. RSS version currently supports enclosure tags is RSS version 2.0. All podcasts are created at the moment using this specification.
The advantage of podcasting is that users can synchronize the content with their media player and listen at a time and place after their elections: radio on demand. And while this technology is not limited to music, it seems to be the area that received the most attention.
Podcasting is generally inexpensive to implement. Investment in a good quality microphone will ensure that the recording is audible. Depending on the knowledge and experience some podcasters invest in audio conversion, compression and audio editing software applications. Also, web space peak measurement and software to create the feed for the podcast is needed. All in all, the initial expense is relatively small.Publishing Podcasts
In three simple steps, independent tv companies can have their voice heard: 1. Publishers create audio content, post it on a Web site for the listeners. 2. create or Edit an existing RSS feed including a link to the audio in the "enclosure" of an RSS 2.0 feed, upload it to a Web site. 3. Tell the world that a podcast is available.Listen to Podcasts:
In three simple steps web surfers can listen to podcasts: 1. download a news aggregator or RSS reader that supports podcasting or sync a wireless device like an iPod with your computer. 2. Enter the URL for the podcast feed for the news aggregator or podcast management software. 3. As new items appear in the aggregator, review podcast's description and listen to those who are of interest.
As popularity increases it is likely many voices will be drowned, but now an independent broadcaster with a microphone and unlimited peak can make a name, create an image and change the world.Useful tools for Podcasting:

RSS does not equal with Blogs

It is difficult to have a conversation about these days-technology that does not involve RSS. At the age of the Internet, the message is expected to be instantaneous. RSS offers instant real-time distribution in an on demand world.
What is RSS?
RSS is a standard format for syndicating information or content over the Internet. When a visitor subscribes to an RSS feed, receive the new information each time the feed is updated.
RSS does not equal with Email
RSS is not email, nor is it designed to be a replacement for email. RSS is an additional communication channel that can be used to deliver content. Email newsletters have had a growing problem with spam. Email open rates have plummeted, filtering systems become increasingly complex and with the complexity and volume even "approved" messages have been able to get through.
RSS feeds are opt-in, and in most cases need subscribers do not provide any personal information to subscribe. RSS is simply an alternative method to communicate with your audience.
Using RSS as a supplement to e-mail. RSS technology is a great complement to the e-mail message, and it will allow you to avoid spam filters and quite possibly reach a new audience, which is leery to give personal information to subscribe.
RSS does not have the problems associated with email marketing. Email filters, does not prevent the message goes through. RSS does not have any costs associated with list maintenance. With RSS, the sender is known, compliance with the can SPAM Act is not a problem. RSS is 100% opt-in, there are no worries of misdirected email or customers do not receive information due to spam.
RSS and email are not mutually exclusive. While it is true that there are significant benefits to RSS, not connected to e-mail communications. RSS has not yet reached the turning point. It is therefore best to offer both RSS and email as options to customers.
RSS does not equal with Blogs
Many assume that RSS is only for syndicating the contents of blogs, nothing could be further from the truth. Blogs and online journals have rocketed to popularity in the last few years, and many bloggers use RSS as a means to distribute and syndicate their blog posts. Subscribers receive information each time the blog is updated. This is not, however, only use for RSS. RSS can deliver any content, including forum posts, discount coupons, newsletters or press releases. Blogs are just one type of information syndicated by RSS feeds.
Blogs can be published using RSS, but do not assume the content found in an RSS feed is from a blog.
How is Podcasting related to RSS?
Podcasts are simply RSS feeds that contain audio content in the test room. In the last few years, the term podcast is extended to include RSS feeds that contain videos and audio files. Podcasts use the RSS specification to deliver the rich media. In the short time RSS has been around, been many misconceptions formed for a surprisingly simple concept. RSS is simply a standard for syndicating information (all types of information) on the World Wide web. Users choose to subscribe to the information in an RSS feed. About the author:

What can be published using RSS

With all the enormous amount of information available on the Internet is becoming more and more difficult to sort through and find what you are looking for. RSS significantly lowers the signal to noise ratio. RSS has the unique ability to collect information and filter it, so you only see unique and relevant content. Information superhighway will be packed with content, and those familiar with technology uses RSS to filter content, allowing them to drill down and access only the content they want, without having to wade through all the noise. There are very few subjects or subjects which do not currently have an RSS feed available. Perhaps it would be easier to ask what can not be published, using RSS? RSS is a standardized format to publish Web content, not just blogs or podcasts, but any type of content. Podcasting clearly shows that feeds can be media-rich, and while podcasting is generally regarded as a medium for entertainment, the educational value of podcasting is not lost on many educational institutions. Business has been a bit slower to embrace the power and importance of RSS as a communication medium, but industry leaders adopt gradually it as a new and powerful method of communication. But back to the original point ... RSS can deliver virtually any type of content, including worksheets, PowerPoint applications, database updates, video tutorial, and more. The true value of RSS feeds is that the Subscriber can review and evaluate the information at a time and place of their own choice. There are a number of ways that businesses can make use of the RSS feeds ... Automated generated Feeds (like ego searches)Google, Yahoo and many Blog search engines can automate the generation of RSS feeds, often based on a keyword or keyword phrase. Each time the keyword appears in a search result, the RSS feed updated. This is a great way for companies to keep up-to-date on industry news, competitors, or even their own company, staff and marks. Manually generated RSS Feeds Webmasters can create targeted RSS feeds that contain unique and targeted content. RSS feeds can be manually created by webmasters to target specific types of content. Existing Feeds Webmasters and publishers can often use existing RSS feeds to create Web content. Existing RSS feeds can be merged and filtered to create new RSS feeds and content. The new merged or filtered RSS feeds can then be republished or displayed on a Web site. There are a number of free tools and tutorials available to assist webmasters in merge, filtering and viewing the contents of a web feed.Link to Display RSS Feeds-http://www.feedforall.com/displaying-rss.htm database Feeds publishers and webmasters can extract information from a database, and then give this content via a RSS feed. The information in such an RSS feed is updated dynamically as the contents of the database changes. RSS is a great tool for businesses, but it is important to respect copyrights. Do not assume that any contained within someone's RSS feed content is free for you to publish. It is important to review any usage policies of RSS feed's original publisher prior to syndicating the contents of the RSS feed. About the author:

Tips for RSS Feeds

RSS is not quite a household word, but technically astute individuals are adopting the use of the RSS feeds at an alarming rate. If you are interested in jumping on to follow, but not quite sure where to start, consider following these simple RSS feed tips to maximize feed compatibility and make your feed stand out from the crowd.
RSS-checklist 1. titles and descriptions.
Always include meaningful keywords in your RSS feed channel title and description. Many readers will view or search for subject-specific RSS feeds by using keywords or keyword phrases. If you have descriptive keywords in your RSS feed title and description is the diet is more likely to be located and subscribed to by interested parties.
2. GUID Format.
Always include a GUID with each feed item. GUID is a globally unique identifier. Each entry must use a different GUID. The GUID will in some cases assist RSS news readers and aggregation software provision when new content has been added to the RSS feed or when existing content in an RSS feed has changed. If you do not use the Guid, the software used to aggregate the feeds can have difficulty detecting changes to the feed items or software may not always recognize new content.
3. Publish dates.
Always include a Publish date on feed items. Publish date should be used, even if the content is timeless. Publish date will help readers determine that status of the content contained in the item feed.
4. Polish your Feed.
Consider including images in your RSS feed. While the added images will not necessarily improve ranking, they will add a professional look to your RSS feed and help brand your feed.
5. feed hosting.
Either host your own feed, or set it to forward to a third party from your site. This will allow you to retain complete control over the RSS feed. You don't have to rely on the stability of another company. If you control the forwarding and at any time you are dissatisfied with the service provided by a third party, you can redirect the feed to a different location.
RSS What

1. Plagiarize.
Do not plagiarize content in your RSS feed, there is a little more to be said. Written words are considered protected in most countries. Posting someone else's work and takes credit for their words is wrong and will damage their reputation as a credible source.

2. Splog.
Do not create splogs by automating feed creation. Splogs just clutter the search machines and catalogues and make it difficult to find RSS feeds with meaningful content.
3. infringe a copyright.
Copyright does not violate by republishing an RSS feeds contents. If you quote content from another RSS feed, credit the source and provide and link to the original source of the content. As a rule of thumb should editorial content exceeds the length of the material in quotation marks the position.
4. violating the TOS.
Do not republish RSS feeds without confirming that feed syndication is allowed. Terms of use are not always visible, so it is important that you check the terms of Service on the Publisher's feed subscription page prior to syndicating the content of another Publisher RSS feed.
5. Provide multiple feed formats.
Give no more feed formats to the same content. As far as the Subscriber, irrelevant version of RSS that you use. Several versions of the same feed simply cause confusion. Almost all RSS readers and news aggregators support all versions of RSS, simply choose a version and gives a single feed.
By adopting good feed practices, you can reap the benefits of having an RSS feed. Following these simple RSS gets to do list you started on the path to RSS success.

Content Syndication through RSS Feeds

Copyright 2005 John Doetsch,
RSS, also known as Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication, has been used for years by online visitors. However, it is only recently started to gain popularity among webmasters as a means to provide visitors with constantly updated content. These feeds were originally designed to deliver up-to-date news faster, but they have since evolved to allow nearly instantaneous updates of many types of information. Growing sites can take advantage of RSS feeds, since they allow for fresh copy updated regularly online. When RSS feeds are inserted into the Web pages, they provide a steady stream of syndicated content is updated continuously. Most RSS feeds are composed of a header, contents, summary and a link to the actual online article. They are typically composed in XML, a markup language similar to HTML, to allow webmasters to manipulate and integrate the new copy into their existing site pages. The increased popularity of these RSS feeds enjoyed online sites as they have helped to drive increased traffic and search engine ranking results. The fact that the syndicated content changes constantly in RSS feeds means that search engine spiders probably visit and index your site pages more often. RSS feeds also keep webmasters from having to worry about updating their content, and visitors can expect fresh articles are available for reading whenever they want. Articles are also easy to find on RSS feeds, as they can be categorized for easy navigation. This increases the chances of receiving visitors from other sites. While modern technology has made to embed RSS feeds into Web site easier, contribute content RSS feeds remains a bit more complex. If you want to post effectively copy onto RSS feeds, you first need an RSS program that will allow you to format your content for syndication. If you are a professional web developer, for example, you might want to create your own XML files to display content. This option allows more flexibility in the way content is displayed. If you are missing the online knowledge to understand how you are using XML, you can invest in one of the many RSS software programs that allow users to create and publish syndicated content without having to use any XML language at all. One of the most popular programs is FeedForAll, which is an inexpensive yet powerful tool for developing and maintaining an RSS feed. This program, and others like it, make it possible for users to exploit their own syndicated content, or to retrieve existing feeds from the Internet. It also gives users the option of manually editing their website to include images and colors that might create a more engaging online experience for customers. As the need for the Internet provides instant access to a wide range of information continues to grow, is RSS feeds have become a critical component of information distribution. It is likely that the RSS feeds will serve as an important tool for sharing information on the World Wide web in the years to come and could, in the not too distant future, even begin to rival email as the preferred method for knowledge sharing. Therefore, understanding how best to take advantage of RSS feeds in your site have a lasting and positive impact on your business growth. About the author:

RSS guidelines

The arguments continue to rage over the ambiguities in the RSS specifications. But the fact is: RSS is here to stay, and the currently defined RSS 2.0 specification is likely to be as good as it will have. Been have made attempts to create "best practices" documents and specification clarifications. We thought it would be useful to provide the General guidelines for those constructing an RSS 2.0 feed. In General, the following guidelines for building an RSS feed. It is good to get into the habit of validating the RSS feed, either with the software, or with an online validator. Here are some general guidelines for creating RSS Feeds: 1. Enclosures includes only one enclosure per item for maximum compatibility. RSS 2.0 specification does not clearly state whether multiple enclosures are allowed or not, but most RSS readers support only a single chassis. It is therefore best to satisfy your readers, and only includes a single enclosure in each RSS feed item. 2. date formats, date formats, can be very difficult; Make sure that all dates are formatted correctly. 3. Codingcoding required for specific characters. If you use software to create the feed, it should handle character encoding for you. 4. HTML while the specification is not explicit, it is generally a good idea not to use HTML coding in the channel or item titles. For maximum feed compatibility, is the only place you need to use HTML in the description of the RSS Feed. 5. GUID the GUID (Global Unique IDentifiers) are not required. However, publishers are encouraged to use a unique string in the GUID. Many RSS readers search GUID changes to determine if new items are available in an RSS feed. 6. Images if you include an image with a feed, the suggested image size 88 x 31 (the maximum allowed size is 144 x 400). If you include an image in the RSS feed item description or enclosure fields, not size, but remember that excessively large graphics, negative effect on the amount of time it takes to load the feed. 7. Favicons some RSS readers and search engines will display the favicon of video hosting services domain beside the listing for an RSS feed. To your feed to stand out, be sure to include a favicon in the root folder of your site's domain. 8. Urlsuse "absolute" URLs for images, home pages and links, instead of "relative" URLs. The intent of RSS is to publish content, so the RSS feed may not always be local to the person viewing the feed. As such, it should be full web path for all images, Web sites and links used. In other words, don't use ".../ImageUrl.gif ", but instead use the full URL" http://www.mydomain.com/imageurl.gif ", when linking to content. 9. Titlesuse a meaningful title for channel feed and RSS feed elements. Most RSS directories and search engines use the words in the channel title and item title to classify RSS feeds.10. MIME typesif you include a file in the enclosure in an RSS feed, you must remember to properly define "file size" and "MIME-type" of the file enclosure. A list of correct MIME type formats can be found here-http://www.feedforall.com/mime-types.htm. 11. Auto-Discovery includes RSS feed "auto-discovery" code into your HTML page header. This will allow certain browsers and RSS feed readers to automatically know that an RSS feed is available for specific content. Tool to create AutoDiscovery12 code-http://www.feedforall.com/autodiscovery.htm. Volume the number of elements contained in a feed is important. Establish a story and expand feed regularly. Prune the RSS feed if it becomes too long; This will help make the RSS feed load faster. About the author:

RSS items

An integral part of getting the most out of RSS really understanding how RSS works as a technology---basically understanding its structure and how to use it is best to get more readership and better search engine rankings.

The good part is that it is easy and quick to make, without need of any technical expertise and use only the default RSS publishing tools.

(A)) HOW RSS FEEDS ARE STRUCTURED
RSS feeds contain the basic information about the RSS feed itself and the individual content items that actually implement the content of the RSS you want to deliver to your target audiences or publish to other sites.

All such information shall be carried out within the different perscribed RSS feed items that are used for different purposes.

But how you use these features can actually define whether you get the most out of RSS or not.

Now all you need to actually learn how to create an RSS feed, because your RSS publishing software will do it for you, but you need to know what to put in these elements to make the most from them.

B) RSS FEED ITEMS
RSS feed items describes the RSS feed.

Each element encloses the actual descriptionary information, like a HTML tag.

The most important elements, you must be aware of in order to enhance marketing results are:

1. RSS FEED TITLE
The name of the RSS feed, which appear in the RSS reader, when a person access to your feed, as well as the search engines and so on.

You will develop your title, so it stands among other feeds in your subscribers RSS readers and attracts them, and is at the same time rich with your most important keywords to assure you achieve better Search engine placement for your feeds.

2. RSS FEED DESCRIPTION
A brief phrase that describes the RSS feed. As with the item title, description, attracting your target audiences (in many RSS readers description appears just below the feed title) and simultaneously assure better placement in search engines.

So keep it user-attractive, disseminating the content of the main points covered in your feed and the main benefits for readers, as well as search-engine-friendly with your most important keywords.

3. RSS FEED IMAGE
Element picture is used to display your logo on the RSS feed presentation in RSS readers. The default width of logo is 88 px and the maximum width is 144 px. The default image height is 31 px and the maximum height is 400 px.

Including your logo in your feed will make your feed more memorable for your subscribers, thus you increase actual readership, as well as provide additional branding for your business.

C) RSS CONTENT ITEM ELEMENTS
While the RSS feed items define and describe an RSS feed on the level of the entire feed, individual content item elements describing and bear the actual information you want to deliver to your target audiences.

And if there is any question about what RSS content items are contained in an RSS feed.

Each content element can then contain some or all of the elements that describe the content item, and give information.

1. RSS content TOPIC TITLE
The title of the specific content of the element, which of course appear in the RSS reader and all other places where your content is displayed.

Your content item titles are one of the most important thing in your RSS, determening whether your readers will actually read the rest of the content or on the search engines will rank it high enough for you.

Just think of the title as an e-mail message subject line and title of a Web page. E-mail subject line is what makes the recipient decide whether he will read the entire message or not. You need to keep to the point and give just enough information to make it inviting to read on.

Web page title has much weight with the search engines, to help you get higher rankings for your content on the keywords you are trying to optimize your Web page.

RSS content element the title performs both of these functions for you at the same time.

2. RSS content ITEM LINK
The URL points to a Web page on your site, where the user can read the entire contents of the content item, if you publish your RSS feeds in summary format. A "read more" type of destination.

If you publish your feeds in full-text format, the link can serve for archiving purposes, for example, if your customers will want to either clickthrough to your site and then bookmark your content in their internet browser.

Of course, if you do not want to give a backlink to your site, you need to, as the link element is optional. This could be useful if you use your RSS feed as a communicational meerly direct channel to send a quick message to your customers or any other, without also giving this content on your site.

But since most RSS users expect to be able to clickthrough it is recommended that you always give the link.

3. RSS content DESCRIPTION
This is where the actual body content of the information you are trying to deliver originate in actual history you are trying to tell.

The item description can be either a short summary, or can contain the full text content of the story, with pictures and almost everything else (there are some restrictions).

Depending on who you ask, some say that summary feeds are better, others will testify to their head to full-text feeds. What you decide you actually depends entirely on your business model and what you are trying to achieve with RSS. In short, there are no rules.

Also, you might not even need a description.

--> If you just want to deliver the headlines of your latest content and have people clickthrough to your site to find out more, you can easily do it. This will usually be useful for syndicating your content to other sites if you do not want them to publish something else, but your headline.

--> Or content that you provide may not even need a description. For example, you could create an RSS feed with the latest updates, stock market where the update would soon be delivered using only the element title. More about this in later chapters. What you need to know right now is, what kind of content can actually be included, if you decide you full text content.

Firstly, if you make it work right, the default text formating, such as bolding, fine in most RSS readers, although some can even ignore. Links within content and images is also not a problem, although again, some RSS readers can simply ignore them.

But still, most of the new is not so add some flavor to your full text content should not be a problem.

If you want to go further, even tables of content should work in most cases, actually, so you can post a full e-zine issue right inside a single RSS feed content element.

The worst problem is that different RSS readers will display this content in different ways, some even can't display tables at all.

And finally, if you want to syndicate your content to other sites, perhaps you just want a summary instead of full text content, so you may need to prepare a consolidated version of the feed as well.

Blogger security

I have heard many a blogger, to say that blogging fills a need. While blogging provides a humanizing effect on news and journaling, it also opens a window into personal life. Was once shared in blogs detail is available only to a select group of friends, and while blogging has become common place, it has risks, which should not be ignored. Cyberstalking is a new phenomenon that allows anonymous online STALKERS to prowl sacrifices. Online bloggers traditionally provide personal information about their lives. As a result, many women that blog are victims. Most people are concerned about children on the Internet and set up strict posting guidelines for children, young people and teenagers, but some adults heed warnings and often do not think that they can also be targeted. Females especially should be cautious when circumnavigating the blogosphere. If you are a blogger or contemplating an online diary, consider these tips to protect your identity: does not have an online profile.
Most blogging services allow bloggers to create an online profile. While it may be fun to post information about likes and dislikes, it is best to refrain from posting any personal information. Personal information does often inadvertently insight physical location or habits. The aggregated information of a personal profile can also help someone interested in pursuing a single person. Post anonymously.
Manage your blog anonymously or adopt an alias for all online posting. This will protect you in case you draw unwanted attention. Avoid personal or identifying information.
Avoid any personal or identifying information, posting to your blog. Do not Post in advance of the bins that you want to be, or on areas that you live near. No images.
Not to post a picture. Photographs can invite problems or unwanted attention. Avoid inappropriate dialogue.
Be careful not to engage in dialogue, which could be interpreted in a way that it was not the intention. Sometimes humorous threads can get out of hand. If the dialogue reduces to an area, creepy, withdraw from the dialogue and refrain from further posting. Also when decisions about individuals online, consider their previous posting behavior and try to think about their real intentions. Lurkers.
Always remember, just because you do not have a dialogue with someone does not mean that they do not read everything you type. Many people simply lurk on the line and engage not in the comment posting, but reading what is written. Your audience could be much greater than you realize. Timeless.
Content on the Internet is timeless, and remember, even if you remove content, it can be archived or syndicated. If you do not want something to read, do not Post it to the Internet. High schools, colleges and employers, search on the Internet to deduce a individuals history. Dirty details on a late night does not help to land a coveted job. The Internet is a haven for all kinds of beasts. Always remember, just because someone says something is true does not mean that it is. Predators may adopt personas of who they think you want them to be. Just as we give guidance to young children, adults should be cautious and take precautions when posting online and. While blogging can be a great outlet and channel, and in slave status immortalizing thoughts, it is important that safety is considered and that good blogging practice followed at all times. RSS experts

Marketers in RSS: best

Copyright 2005 Rok Hrastnik

What have experienced marketers saying about RSS?

What is your top tip?

We set to know that the end of 2004 to collect the best possible insights on RSS marketing from top marketers and RSS developers and managers, to Unleash marketing and Publishing power of RSS. Let s get started

1. How can RSS be fully integrated in our marketing and communications mix

Answered by Robin good, MasterNewMedia.org

"From what I can see the RSS is an effective marketing channel, since it allows for easy and expanded distribution of your core news and information channels to the widest possible audience with very low costs, maximum compatibility with a large number of media devices and added the ability for the customer to take on this information and reuse it to hir (his + hers) advantage.

Which allows customers to further be marketers and promoters of your own products and services. If we allow open content of public RSS feeds to be freely subscribed, syndicated, re-aggregated and re-released we will only find that the new and larger value can be extracted each time a person go about this.

So it is important not to keep the RSS newsfeeds below the locks.

RSS is one of the cleanest viral marketing channels. Its virality is spelled clearly in its acronym: Really Simple Syndication.

Yes, you must make these three words make sense in order to exploit the maximum out of this content format.

Allow syndication. Do not restrict it.

Let someone else take your RSS feed and do things with it. encourage them to do. Have them use it to republish your news (among others) on their home page. Help them to achieve this. Write and explain with short stories or simple tutorials, how easy it is to search, filter and aggregate content from various RSS feeds and to create dedicated niche news channels on most any subject you can think of. Explain openly that if you create such a dedicated newschannels they can be so easily republished as news Web site, which can carry the contextual ads (Google AdSense) from day one. Very sustainable, if not quite profitable. See for example of work by Waypath with their Blender experiment and other useful and complementary uses of RSS, can be economically profitable. "

And another great tips from Robin: "create so many RSS newsfeeds to your content which is the subject/themes you cover. Don't pack all your content in a generic RSS channel. "

2. what will really drive readers/customers to adopt RSS? Buyers of the products and services are most likely to adopt RSS?

Answered by Bill French, MyST technology partners

"I don't think anyone wants to adopt RSS; rather, they want timely information in a controlled and organized way so that it helps them do their jobs better, or manage their personal information diet. This is exactly why we adopted (mostly) SMTP but none of us are considered "adopt SMTP". E-mail applications and benefits of a store-and-forward architecture with reasonable certainty of supply drove us into the realm of SMTP. And the driving force that seems to be causing early adopters use RSS feeds has more to do with the amount information and news, we find ourselves awash in every day.

There is no question; all will eventually adopt RSS (or similar format), but we know that has happened when no one refers to it as RSS. ;-)"

3. How would you compare RSS and email as content delivery tools?

Answered by Tom Hespos, underscore marketing

"RSS is about consumer control. How many times have you thought of subscribing to an e-mail newsletter, but thought, "Nah, they'll probably sell my e-mail address to spammers" and do not subscribe? With RSS, consumers can unsubscribe from feeds at any time, so the risk of getting unwanted content or spam is almost zero.

I believe that consumers have been waiting for some time. The newly-added control will make them more likely to aggregate content from publishers they read regularly. As a marketing guy, I think it is appropriate to mention that the move to RSS is not without risks. Content publishers know that it is a bit cumbersome to unsubscribe from an e-mail newsletter, so they've taken some chances with their email newsletters as they could not take with RSS-they make stand-alone sponsor messages load up their HTML newsletters with animated ads, maybe take a risk with some of the stories they write.

When the button "Unsubscribe" is right there for feed subscribers, publishers may not have a chance if they screw. With RSS, there are no tv-the message "Please return" to people who unsubscribe. If you lose someone, you will lose them until they decide to return. I am sure publishers should handle RSS with velvet gloves, until they get a sense of what their subscribers would like and what will make them run for the door. "

Get your Feed listed within hours at Yahoo in 5 simple steps

Copyright 2004 Tinu AbayomiPaul

Let us be honest. There are three types of people in the world. * Yahoos * Googlers * people are neither or both. I've been lurking in forums, and I realized something-they seem to be a mass militants than me. But then, almost all are. I've been a Google gal for some time. There I said it. And why not? Google has been good to me. Yahoo finally has me convinced that they, as a minimum, the top contender for the title of heavyweight Search engine champion of the world. I now take them very seriously for many reasons. (I will not bore you with all of them here-but if you would like to be bored, see the ongoing updates-: http://freetrafficdirectory.com/yes2yahoo-or if you are new to RSS and don't get how it can help your marketing, join our discussion-http://www.freetrafficdirectory.com/Forums.)

What really has the potential to turn me in a type 2 or 3 is the attention Yahoo pays to RSS. Like all I heard big announcement back in February this year that Yahoo develop an RSS folder and had re-launched their Beta RSS headlines module of the "My Yahoo!". Still, I took my time hopping on the "marketing through RSS" bandwagon, even though I've had feeds on most of my sites since the end of 2002. When I finally started using my feeds during some research, I ran across Yahoo's "add to my Yahoo!" button on many sites that also carry the orange "xml" insignia, and I must say, it shocks me how easy seems to be to get Yahoo attention to your feed. The people at Yahoo tell them that they produce an RSS directory on this page: http://my.yahoo.com/s/publishers.html#find

The page goes to tell them to get your feed included is as simple as adding your feed to your own "My Yahoo" page. You may think, as I was that this cannot be the same Yahoo we are talking about. The one whose search engine many secretly hoped would fail in the off chance that we could go back to Google on Yahoo days? (Don't look at me. I'm not that much of a Google gal.) But yes, the same Yahoo Whose directory many found so difficult to get into in days of yore, displays your feed in their directory almost immediately.

Promote my study, I blew the dust off my own Yahoo page, unused since 2003, scrolled to the bottom, and click the button "Select content". They don't even try to hide it. In five steps, taking me less than a minute, my link was added. At first was section of the settings for "My Front page" under "My Yahoo! Essentials", "RSS headlines (BETA) new!". I chose to (step one), and on the next page was all I had to do type in my news feed, (step two) click Search (step four), and then when the page path settings, click on the button "Finish" (step 5). I logged into my site control panel and checked the logs that show my most recent visitors. I saw the line "yahoofeedseeker/1.0", not just at my feed, but it points to, almost immediately the links.

A few hours later, I went to search the folder for feeds similar to mine. A search for "traffic secret" popped my site up-now is the rapid admission. I noticed the next day, each time I updated part of my site that has the diet doubles the number of visitors to the page. So it looks like if you are not in a crowded niche, now is a great time to add your feed-there were about 48 results for "internet marketing", but only 7 for "sunglasses". Once you have sent, don't forget to stick one of the buttons "add to my Yahoo!" on a visible place on your web property.

The following link will take you directly to the instructions on Yahoo: http://my.yahoo.com/s/publishers.html#promote-or if you're as lazy as I am, get Yahoo to do the work for you-http://my.yahoo.com/s/button.html. Will Yahoos search RSS Directory for your site or others? Just go to "My Yahoo!" page, find where you've added the RSS headlines block and click "Edit", usually in the upper right corner of the block of content. That will take you to a new page.

Now that you would normally type a URL, Enter your search term, or if you know a site has a feed, but don't know the address, the type of the page home. Advanced users can also click the import function to import feeds through their.OPML file. You can view up to 50 feeds per page, but there seems to be a limit on how many feeds, you can include in Yahoo. When opening a Browse-able version of Yahoos RSS Directory, and how much more traffic you can expect when it does not? I have not heard any speculation on when the Beta period is up, but I would be willing to be it will be soon. My proposal?

Add your link now, while Yahoo appears to take all.
